Nuts of all kinds are excellent sources of oils and fat. Nuts provide us with omega 6 and fulfill our need for acidic foods (we need a balance of both acidic and alkaline foods). Fat is good for neurological health so I don’t agree with fat-free diets. Nuts can make you happy! Our bodies need a variety of fats and oils. Some other sources of good fats are coconut oil, avocados, and (this you will be happy to hear) chocolate!
I have a jar of nuts I keep in my kitchen and it is my go-to snack jar. Right now, it is mixed with almonds, cashews, pine nuts, and pistachio nuts. This jar has saved me from snacking badly SO many times! Anytime I’m hungry and I head to the kitchen, I always grab a handful of nuts first and it satiates my hunger.
It is a good idea to make your own “mixed nuts” to incorporate the nuts that you like. Most of us like to eat the roasted, salted nuts but those are not as good for you as raw nuts for obvious reasons. But if that is what will get you to eat nuts, then eating the roasted, salted kind is better than none.
Nuts are expensive. A 16 ounce package of raw cashew nuts goes for $6.99 at Trader Joe’s. and a tub of raw almonds is around $15. Raw nuts will always be a bit more and organic, even more. It may be cheaper to buy your favorite bag of potato chips but the health benefits you get from spending a bit more goes a long way.
It is better to spend a bit more to buy cage-free eggs, grass fed beef, wild fish, and organic fruits and vegetables because in the long run they are better for your health. Not only are they cleaner and healthier, they also taste better!
Nuts are great for a pre and post-workout snack. They provide you with the energy you need during your work-out and are not heavy. That’s why a lot of energy bars contain nuts.
