Coconut water … are you picturing yourself laying on a beach on a tropical island with a straw sticking out of a your own personal coconut? I thought so =). Being that we live in Manhattan, that image is quite necessary sometimes to get away from the hustle and bustle. Well, now you can grab your own tropical escape before you head into the subway… and what’s even better is that it is good for you!

You may already know the rule of thumb to drinking water… 8 glasses of 8 ounces a day to keep the doctor away. Water helps to hydrate your body – its cells, organs, skin, etc. We tend to lose water very easily through common occurrences such as sweating and bowel movements. The best way to check to see if you are hydrated is to look at the color of your urine. Darker urine means you are dehydrated. Admittedly, it is not easy to drink 64 fluid ounces of water everyday in addition to other fluids! But did you know that it doesn’t HAVE to be just water?

Coconut water can be one of many options to reach for to hydrate your body during the day!

As long as women drink 2 liters of total fluid (for men it is slightly higher at 3 liters), you will be doing just as the doctor ordered and just as your body needs. The amount of hydration depends also, on how active you are. If you are an endurance athlete, your body, regardless of gender, will require more fluid intake and more fluids with electrolytes to replenish those lost during your workout.

Coconut water… it is low calorie, low sodium, fat-free, and contains the same amount of potassium as a whole banana. Coconut water is essentially the liquid found in young coconuts before they mature and become that white, delicious flesh inside a mature coconut. It is naturally sweetened, never from concentrate, and is a great option if you want to meet your daily intake of fluids but want some taste other than plain old water.

There are many brands of coconut water out there since everyone jumped on the band wagon – Zico, VitaCoco, to name a few. There are even different flavors of coconut water – pomegranate acai berry, pineapple mango, and more. If you do decide to try a flavored version, beware, they have more sugar.

So if you are dreading reaching for your third bottle of water for the day, why not try some coconut water and allow yourself a temporary escape to a tropical paradise? You deserve it!
